Summer Writing Contest 2024

Anna Qu is a Chinese American writer. Her critically acclaimed debut memoir, Made In China: A Memoir of Love and Labor, was named a New York Times Editors’ Choice pick. Her essays have appeared in The New York TimesThreepenny ReviewLumina, Kartika, and Kweli Journal, among others. She was a 2023 Black Mountain Institute Shearing Fellow and has received support from Yaddo and Ragdale. She teaches at New England College and The Book Project at Lighthouse Writers Workshop, and recently moved to the Denver area with her partner and their two cats.

This contest is judged blind and identifying information should be scrubbed from your manuscript. Submissions should be 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with a word count on the first page. Please submit only once. Although we understand submitting simultaneously, we appreciate those who do not. All submissions will be considered for publication.

We cannot accept submissions from anyone affiliated with Old Dominion University, past or present.

As with general publication, BSR acquires only the first serial publication rights of accepted work. Copyright is asserted on behalf of the author; all reprint rights (print or electronic) revert to the author upon publication, but we ask that you mention Barely South Review as first publication appearance.
