Brian Freer was born on September 16, 1973, in Chicagoland, where he was introduced to art and photography at an early age, thanks to his grandparents’ enthusiasm for the medium. His academic journey took him to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he pursued studies in literature and biology. Although not officially enrolled in the photography department, Brian utilized the university’s lab, embodying the spirit of a “presumptive student.”

Before venturing into publishing and creative agencies, Brian worked as a programmer and graphic arts software integrator in the newspaper industry. In 2005, he founded “Health Journal,” a regional monthly print magazine. In 2010, Brian established Tusk Creative Agency, serving as its creative director.

Brian lives in Williamsburg, Virginia, and is represented by Matney Gallery. His work has been included in numerous group shows. In June 2022, he was honored with a solo show titled “Natural Causes.” This exhibition showcased a collection of images Brian captured over two years, many during the pandemic, featuring swampy landscapes, mountain vistas, and megalithic structures. “Natural Causes” delves into themes of spiritual change and impermanence and invites viewers to reflect on their primal psyche.

Beyond landscapes, Brian’s artistic inquiry extends to exploring concepts of stoicism, realism, and Zen Buddhism through the prism of nature. His figurative work touches on sexuality, love, and relationships, offering a view of human experiences and emotions through form.

The featured work,”Reverse Perception,” is an experimental video investigating how perception influences our psyche, with waves, wind, and rain playing in reverse to create a mesmerizing uneasiness from an otherwise calming natural phenomena.

Brian Freer’s journey through art, literature, and creativity underscores a deep engagement with the natural world and human consciousness, inviting introspection and appreciation for existence and its fleeting moments.
