Beneath

by Jeremy Hulatt

There are days that go unnoticed by the clouds.
Storms travel the oceans like whales.
And beneath all of that sky
Ants carry petals through a still garden.

Storms travel the oceans like whales
And there are shoulders heavy with rain.
Ants carry petals through a still garden –
A magnificent bloom to their beautiful woman.

There are shoulders heavy with rain
And hands heavy with years.
Magnificent blooms for beautiful women
Grow along the edge of a path through the jungle.

Hands heavy with years
Open a large pit in the earth.
Along the edge of a path through the jungle
There are enormous stones.

A large pit is opened in the earth.
There is a quietness.
There are enormous stones.
Shadows lie beneath.

There is a quietness.
A voice hushed under a sigh.
Shadows lie beneath
Blossoms heavy with light.

A voice hushed under a sigh
Travels the ocean like a storm.
Shadows lie beneath
Ants carrying petals through still gardens.

Jeremy Hulatt grew up in Virginia Beach, attended Kempsville High School, and received his B.A. from Old Dominion University with an emphasis in creative writing. After graduating he took a part time job at a credit union which has turned into a 13 year career. He is currently leading his own branch and enjoying every minute of it. When he’s not at work or playing handyman around the house, he writes poetry, plays guitar, practices photography, spends as much time out in nature as is possible, and generally gets thoroughly worn out playing with his young daughter, Zoey.
