sitting on a bench at a brethren’s school in bridgewater, virginia

George Perreault

after James Wright

too early for brunch
off to where newer buildings
colonize the spacious lawns

starlings and squirrels
at what some would call play
if anything has will

jamestown’s close enough
you can catch the echoing
ignorance and arrogance

their terror of the forest
impinging upon everything
unhinged from home

this spring breeze
this solid iron bench
if it happens here

don’t topple into alarm
let it more resemble
look who’s up and died

normal
is only a mirror
giving what has passed
