Welcome to the April 2011 issue of Barely South Review, the literary journal in electronic format housed in Old Dominion University’s MFA in Creative Writing program!
This issue marks our One Year Anniversary, and we are thrilled with how successful the last year has been. Not only have we been privileged enough to publish some fine work by both established and up-and-coming writers, but the journal itself reflects the hard work of a group of ODU M.F.A. students who volunteer their time to make each issue a quality experience for readers. As we at ODU prepare to enter the summer break, we’d like to thank all students, last year and this year, who have contributed to Barely South Review‘s success.
Included in this issue are the Undergraduate and Graduate winning poems and honorable mentions from the Old Dominion University 2011 College Poetry Prize contest. The judge this year was prize-winning poet Adrian Matejka. Thank you to our prize winners for allowing us to publish their work here, and thank you to all of our April contributors, whose fine work you will find below.
The cover art for this issue is by Manuela Mourão, and you will find more of her paintings from a project called Whitewash, an analysis of Portuguese notions of race initially formed during the sixteenth-century Portuguese maritime expansion. Check out the entire project using the link above.
In terrific news for both author and Barely South Review, Jill McCabe Johnson, whose nonfiction piece “Horseshoe Highway” appeared in our inaugural issue, recently received news from Bill Henderson, of Pushcart Press, alerting her to her nomination for a Pushcart prize. Jill’s essay was nominated by one or more members of the Board of Contributing Editors for the Pushcart Prize XXXVI: Best of the Small Presses. Barely South Review is thrilled to have been the launching pad for the piece, and we’re all pulling for Jill.
Spring is finally here, and we celebrate it with the poetry, fiction, and nonfiction you’ll find in this month’s issue. Take your time exploring, and we’ll be back in the Fall with our September BOUNDARIES issue!
